How to Navigate a Map of Questions: Artistic Practices in Times of Uncertainty

Ilana Boltvinik’s work brings together theory and visuality through an extradisciplinary artistic and research practice developed in dialogue with anthropology, science, and other fields of knowledge. Her approach focuses on critical ecologies and the socioterritorial implications of residual matter, exploring relationships between the human and the more-than-human. In particular, she has researched waste as a socio-aesthetic phenomenon that reveals political, biological, and material dimensions.

She studied Visual Arts at “La Esmeralda” and at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, and holds a PhD in Social Sciences and Humanities from UAM Cuajimalpa. She is currently a researcher at Universidad Veracruzana. She has been a member of Mexico’s National System of Art Creators, a guest editor for the journal post(s), and a core partner of the international SMUS network. As co-founder of the TRES collective, she has received distinctions such as the Robert Gardner Fellowship from Harvard and has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions internationally.
