Joaquín Barriendos writes about the intersection of design studies, visual cultures, environmental art theory, and architecture. He teaches transitional design and architectural theory at Tecnológico de Monterrey (School of Architecture, Art, and Design). Previously, he was a research associate in museum studies at the Mexican National Council for Humanities, Sciences, and Technology (2022-2023), a postdoctoral researcher at the INBA-National Research Center (2021-2022), a full-time associate professor at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (2016–2021), a full-time adjunct professor at Columbia University in New York (2011-2016), a research associate at Universidad de Barcelona (2007–2010), and a researcher at AGAUR, Universidad de Barcelona (2003–2005). His publications have been translated into German, French, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, Catalan, and Italian. He has served on the Executive Committee of the Institute of Latin American Studies (Columbia University) and the Visual Arts Section of the Latin American Studies Association (University of Pittsburgh). He currently sits on the editorial boards of more than eight international journals, including the Journal of Visual Culture (SAGE), the Journal of Global Studies and Contemporary Art, and Revista de Artes Visuais (Porto Arte). Barriendos is a member of the International Association of Art Critics and the Mexican National System of Researchers (SNI-I Conahcyt).
